The Vietnam War was a long, costly war and its impact will be felt for years. It was a war between the communist region of North Vietnam with its southern allies, the Viet Cong, and South Vietnam with its main ally, the United States. The war began in 1954 and after growing opposition to the war from Americans, The US withdrew in 1973. The Soviet Afghan war was a continuation of how communism wanted to proceed. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 by sending in 30,000 troops and toppled the presidency of Hafizullah Amin and aimed to prop up their new but faltering client state. This war quickly settled into stalemate and the Soviets failed to implement a sympathetic regime and they withdrew their troops in 1989. The invasion of Afghanistan was the beginning of what was a disintegrating Soviet Union. The Soviet Afghan war has been called "the Vietnam War of Afghanistan"
